What to do while you are here
Penarth Pier
Opened in 1898. The pavilion at the end is now a cinema, gallery and cafe, and the Esplanade runs the length of the front behind it.
The seafront and the cliff walk
South along the cliff top towards Lavernock, with the Bristol Channel on one side and not a great deal on the other. Ice cream on the way back.
Cardiff Bay, on foot
Twenty minutes north across the barrage puts you in the Bay, with the Millennium Centre and the waterfront restaurants, and a short taxi back afterwards.
Eat and drink
Windsor Road and Glebe Street hold most of the spots to eat: bistros, delis, and cafes that fill up on a Saturday. The Esplanade has great ice cream and the pier cafe.
Getting about
Penarth and Cogan stations reach Cardiff Central and Queen Street in about ten minutes. Cardiff Airport is around twenty-five minutes.
With children
Cosmeston Lakes Country Park is a mile inland, with two lakes, woodland and a reconstructed medieval village.
The walk to do
From the Esplanade up through Alexandra Park, west across the barrage into Cardiff Bay, then home by taxi in six minutes.
