Worth your time

What to do while you are here

Coloured beach huts above the sand at Whitmore Bay, Barry Island

Whitmore Bay and Barry Island

A broad, south-facing sandy bay with the promenade, the amusements and the pleasure park behind it. The coloured huts along the back of the sand are hired by the day.

The sandy beach at Barry Island

Jackson’s Bay

Round the headland from the main beach. Smaller, quieter, and where people who live here actually go.

Sand, sea wall and the colonnaded shelter on the seafront at Barry

The Knap and Porthkerry

A pebble beach, a country park and a railway viaduct, twenty minutes west along the coast path. Woodland running down to the water.

Local Tips

Eat and drink

Chips and ice cream on the island, done properly. Near the island guests must visit the Academy for quick coffee or the Goodsheds for a great selection street food outlets, bars and independent shops. If you are looking for something slower paced, head down to the Knap gardens for an independent cafe to stop off at on your morning walk.

Getting about

Three stations, with frequent trains into Cardiff. Rhoose for Cardiff Airport is one stop west. Parking is straightforward and free at our properties, which is one of the real advantages over permit parking in the capital.

Gavin and Stacey

The series was set and largely filmed here, and people still come to see Trinity Street, the arcade and the island.

Dogs

Pets are welcome at most of our properties. It is worth considering that dogs are restricted on the beach between 1 May and 30 September, but Jackson’s Bay and the coast path west are open all year.

When to book

Late July and August go first, along with every bank holiday from Easter. Summer demand is high and a good forecast can fill the town. Make sure to book a few weeks in advance.
